St. Catherine School

At St. Catherine School we uphold and are intentional about living and sharing the richness of the Catholic Faith. We are reminded of this through our school motto;

"We rise to meets Christ's challenge."

To encourage the students every month and invite them into experiencing the faith in more tangible ways we acknowledge and talk about a Saint of the Church each month. Each Saint discussed is unique and shows us an example of heroic virtue. We emphasize a specific virtue or characteristic in each Saint that is attainable for us also through the grace of God. We also take time to acknowledge three students each month that we as staff believe are examples to their peers of the same virtue or characteristic expressed by the Saint.

Saint of the Month 2024/25

St Catherine AnnouncementsOur October Saint was St Teresa of Avila, who as a youth cared only about boys, clothing, flirting and rebelling so her father sent her to a convent. At first, she hated it, but began to truly enjoy it and grow in her relationship with God.

After choosing religious life she she still struggled to put God first, and she also struggled to pray and take time for God. When she was 41 a priest convinced her to return to prayer and as she did God gave her spiritual delights, including levitation.

At the age of 43, she became determined to found a new convent that went back to the basics of a contemplative order: a simple life of poverty devoted to prayer. These plans were met with anger and outrage by the people. Despite this, she opened St. Joseph’s Convent at the age of 51 and continued to found more convents even in the roughest of towns!

Soon she had many people who wanted to join her order, and learn how to pray:

 "Prayer in my opinion is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who we know loves us.”

LeadershipwinnersDuring our "Gospel Time" on the first Friday of the month, the school gathered together and we discussed and acknowledged the following students for being peer examples of the qualities of leadership we recognized in St Teresa of Avila.

This acknowledgement reminds us of the universal call to Sainthood. That we are all called to be Saints, and practicing heroic virtue can be done in the seemingly "ordinary lives" that we live.

Thank you and congratulations to

Kaliena in Grade 2, George in Grade 6

and Miki in Grade 9; for showing us how to practice leadership, not by being demanding or controlling but by doing what is good and right no matter what others might say.
